"Rock Star of the Ukulele" Shines With Aloha Spirit

Nashville, TN (May 10, 2013) - APA Nashville artist and global phenomenon Jake Shimabukuro will make his national broadcast debut with the PBS premiere of JAKE SHIMABUKURO: LIFE ON FOUR STRINGS tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT (check local listings)A production of The Center for Asian American Media and Pacific Islanders in Communications, this compelling documentary directed by Tadashi Nakamura, rich with performance footage, profiles Jake's evolution and resonates with his native Hawaiian Aloha spirit.

Already popular in his native Hawaii and Japan where he'd spent a decade touring, Jake was virtually unknown on the American mainland, making it difficult to convince the music industry that true magic could be brought forth by a solo ukulele player.  Today, known as the "rock star of the ukulele," Jake has redefined the world's perception of the instrument, garnering accolades from the likes of Eddie Vedder, Perez Hilton and Dr. Sanjay Gupta.  He has been declared a musical "hero" by Rolling Stone, while amazing audiences from Kimmel to Conan and even the Queen of England.  His solo concerts fill symphony halls and his fans range from pre-schoolers to octogenarians, crossing boundaries between cutting edge hipsters and high-brow arts patrons alike.  Tastemakers have even compared his fearless performances and unflagging energy to rock legend Jimi Hendrix and Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis.

An impromptu performance at Central Park captured on video has received more than 11 million views on YouTube.   The eclectic mix of his music ranges from classical to pop to traditional Hawaiian and Jazz.  For more information, touring schedule and more, go to and follow Jake on Facebook and Twitter.
